What is the annual profection?
The annual profectionis a Hellenistic astrology technique that symbolically “advances” by one house each year of life, starting from the birthday. At birth, house 1 is activated; one year later, house 2; and so on up to house 12, then the cycle starts again at house 1 for the 13th year.
Each activated house corresponds to a sign, and each sign has a traditional ruler — a planet that governs it. This planet becomes the ruler of the year: its position and condition in your birth chart traditionally give the tone and priority area of life for the current year.
How the calculation is done
The engine first counts the completed years between your birth and the target date, by real birthday. The remainder of this division by 12 gives the number of houses traveled from house 1 — the year’s profected house.
The sign of this profected house is determined in the Sign-based(Whole Sign) system, the convention specific to this Hellenistic technique: house 1 corresponds to the Ascendant’s whole sign, house 2 to the next sign, without regard to the cusps’ precise degrees. The traditional ruler of that sign is then identified, and its position in your birth chart (sign, house, degree) is retrieved.

- How is the year's profected house calculated?
- You count the completed years from birth to the target date (by real birthday, not a simple division). This number of years, modulo 12, gives the number of houses traveled from house 1: at 0 completed years, house 1 is activated; at 1 year, house 2; at 12 years, you return to house 1; and so on throughout life.
- What is the "ruler of the year"?
- Each profected house corresponds to a sign (counted from the Ascendant's sign, in the traditional Sign-based system). That sign has a traditional ruler — for example Mars for Aries or Scorpio, Venus for Taurus or Libra. The planet that thus rules the profected sign becomes the "ruler of the year": its natal position (sign, house) and condition traditionally give the main theme of the current year.
- Why "Sign-based" (Whole Sign) rather than Placidus?
- The rest of the site's calculation (birth chart, houses) uses the Placidus system, more widespread in modern Western astrology. Annual profections are a technique inherited from Hellenistic astrology, which natively relies on the Sign-based system (each house = one whole sign, house 1 starting at the Ascendant's sign) — this isn't an inconsistency, but the convention specific to this technique, taken as-is from the reference engine.
- Do annual profections require a precise birth time?
- Yes. House 1 (and so the whole sequence of profected houses) starts from the Ascendant's sign, which changes by about one degree every four minutes. Without a reliable time, the Ascendant's sign — and so the profected sign each year — isn't guaranteed to be exact.
- Does the annual profection replace transits or progressions?
- No, it adds to them. The profection gives a priority theme and area of life for the year (the activated house and its ruler); transits and progressions then refine the calendar within that year. Hellenistic practitioners traditionally combine all three techniques rather than choosing just one.
