What is a birth chart?
The birth chart — or natal chart — is the photograph of the sky as it appeared above your birthplace, at the exact moment you were born. It fixes the position of the ten classical planets, the Ascendant and the Midheaven, the layout of the twelve astrological houses and the geometry of aspects between planets.
Three entry points form what is known as the Big Three: the Sun, which describes your core identity; the Moon, which speaks to your emotional world and inner needs; the Ascendant, how you present yourself and meet the world. The seven other planets — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — each color a specific facet of the personality, from the way you think to your relationship with power.
A birth chart does not predict the future. It offers a symbolic reading grid of deep tendencies, tensions to integrate, and available resources. It is read in the present, throughout life, in light of time-based astrology — transits, progressions, planetary returns — which show how this birth sky resonates with the sky of the moment.
How your chart is calculated
The calculation relies on the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference astronomical ephemeris library used by leading astrology software since 1997. Planetary positions are exact to the arcsecond, precision more than sufficient for any natal reading.
From your date, time, and place of birth, the engine determines the exact instant in Universal Time, the geographic coordinates of the place, then calculates the ecliptic, the house cusps in the Placidus system, the angles (Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, Imum Coeli), and the major aspects between planets according to the classical orbs.
Your data never leaves the server for a third party. Geocoding of the birthplace relies on a self-hosted dataset (about 50,000 cities worldwide), with no call to an external API. No personal information is kept beyond your session — the birth data is hashed for the cache key and never stored in plain text.

- Why does my birth time matter for calculating my birth chart?
- The time fixes the Ascendant and the twelve astrological houses, which shift by about one degree every four minutes. Without a precise time, the Sun, Moon, and planet positions in signs remain calculable, but the personal sky map — the Ascendant/Descendant axis, the Midheaven, and the house distribution — is no longer reliable.
- What do the 12 astrological houses mean?
- The houses divide the sky into twelve sectors representing the major areas of life: identity, resources, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, transformation, meaning, career, friendships, and inner life. The system used here is Placidus, the most widespread in modern Western astrology.
- What are the major aspects between planets?
- Five major aspects: the conjunction (0°, fusion of energies), the sextile (60°, opportunity), the square (90°, driving tension), the trine (120°, flowing harmony), and the opposition (180°, polarity). They describe the geometry of the relationships between planets at the moment of birth.
- Is the calculation reliable?
- The engine relies on the Swiss Ephemeris, the reference astronomical ephemeris in astrological software. Planetary positions are calculated to the arcsecond for any date between 1800 and 2400. No astrological rule is invented: every interpretation refers back to a documented convention.
- What if I don't know my birth time?
- You can enter 12:00: the planetary positions in signs remain valid and the Dominant traits (element, modality) remain readable. The Ascendant, Midheaven, and houses should then not be used — their uncertainty is too great. To find a precise time, the registry office of the birthplace can issue a full birth certificate.
- Do I need to be an astrology expert to understand my chart?
